Suzanne (00:43):

Today on the Midlife Business Show, I’m talking about four simple tweaks for you to increase your reach on Instagram. Now marketing on Instagram is a long game, but it can be a lucrative one. The first thing to know about Instagram is this. Whilst Instagram influences are seemingly dime a dozen these days, the truth is most people don’t become insta-famous overnight. And actually I’d ask you to consider whether you wish to be insta-famous. That said Instagram has proven it’s a powerful marketing tool with staying power. As of January, 2022, there are a whopping 1 billion Instagram users and over 30 million UK users. And that number continues to grow every day. So no matter what you sell, it’s safe to say. There are likely people on Instagram who might be interested in buying it. If you have a flare for either images or writing or speaking, because Instagram continues to push video based features.

(01:51):

You can potentially reach thousands of ideal clients on Instagram. If you know how to use it right now, Instagram regularly adds new features, which can make the platform feel a bit complicated, but no matter how you choose to use it, and how often there are a few simple tweaks that you can make today that will explode your potential to reach new people. So let me tell you about them.

So tweak number one, it’s be consistent, but not just about when you post. You’ve probably heard the advice be consistent a thousand times when it comes to social media, it’s one of those things that I talk about again and again, but the thing is when it comes to Instagram, in particular, you don’t just need to be consistent about when you post, but also what you post and what it looks like. Because Instagram is a highly visual platform.

That said it’s important you have a brand style, so your photos should look similar and you should stick to just a few fonts. You should also stick to a few filters if you use them at all.

And of course you need to make sure that your Instagram is in line with your website, branding and branding that you might use on any particular, other social media platforms. So be very careful when choosing filters to make sure that you can apply that same look and feel across your social media.

Now on the content side, you should have a loose, but intentional content strategy for Instagram. This means that you shouldn’t just post whatever you want, whenever you want. You want to put a little thought into what you are posting and why you don’t need a crazy strict content calendar. But a good rule of thumb is to keep the content of your posts within three to five content themes.

(03:48):

So this will help you become known for something in the eyes of your ideal clients and followers. They’ll see you as a consistent, reliable source of information on these particular topics. Now, this can be something that some of my clients find difficult to get their heads around. If you’d like to explore this in more depth, then book an hour with me and I can include personalized tips for you on how to choose your themes and dive deeper into the idea of consistency and exactly how to create it with your Instagram.

So tweak number two is to direct people to do something Instagram won’t work for you. If you don’t make it easy for people to go from consuming and loving your content to actually working with you, that said, you need to specifically tell people what to do. If you want them to engage with or contact you.

(04:45):

If you don’t do this at the moment, you’ll be surprised how much this one little tweak can increase. The number of people popping into your DMS or commenting on your posts. There are tons of ways to get people, to engage with your posts and even your stories on Instagram. For example, you can direct them to DMU at the bottom of a post. If they’re interested in the topic or offer you talked about in the post, an alternative, but popular one is to remind people that the link is in your bio. On top of this, you can ask people to use a particular emoji to comment if they agree with you, or you can ask that for their opinion, within your stories, you can ask questions and you can set up little stickers that will encourage people to answer your questions and those drop straight into your inbox from their inbox.

(05:45):

It’s a fantastic way to begin a conversation. So tweak number three is all about showing off your personality. Nowadays, you’re not just selling a product or service. You are selling yourself and your unique story and message to people want to know the person behind the business. Luckily, Instagram is a fabulous place to showcase who you really are and build that no like, and trust factor fast, Instagram offers several ways for people to get to know you from your posts to stories, which have a very in the moment feel since they’re only available for 24 hours to reels. Now reels are much discussed. Aren’t they on Instagram, a real is a short video that Instagram is encouraging users to post by making sure they get great reach. So it’s a fantastic way to get your content in front of other people and particularly new people who may be interested in following you.

(06:49):

Now, I know a lot of us don’t wish to be making videos where we’re seen to be dancing or pointing at floating words on the screen, but reels don’t just have to be like that. You can make them just face a camera, or you can even make short wheels of photos that you’ve put together in Canberra to create a mini video and upload it that way. So don’t be put off really just think about how you can best use reels to extend your Instagram reach. So you need to think about how you can show off your personality and give a peek into who you are on Instagram. Everything you create for the platform is an opportunity to show a bit more of who you are and connect authentically with your viewers. This is from what you post about to how your photos look to the way you write your captions, to how you show up on video.

(07:46):

It all tells your viewers something about you. Of course, there are specific strategies and techniques to use to bring more of your unique voice and personality into every piece of content you create on Instagram. But the most important strategy is to be yourself. And here is tweak. Number four, it’s used the right hashtags. Now hashtags have been the primary way to connect with new people who are potentially interested in your products and services on Instagram. And that’s just been one problem with this. Most business owners don’t know how to use hashtags or aren’t using them at all or are using them all wrong. For example, if you sell coffee mugs, it’s not in your best in trips to use hashtags like coffee or even coffee mugs, at least not on their own. The same thing for you. Coaches hashtag tagging hashtag live coach or hashtag coach in your post.

(08:45):

Isn’t going to suddenly flood your feed with lots of potential clients. And the reason for this is you need to think about who is using those hashtags. So if you take the coach example, the hashtag life coach is much more likely to be used by someone who is a life coach than by someone who’s looking for a life coach. So think about what hashtags your clients might be using. So Instagram limits the amount of hashtags you can use per post. So it’s important for you to choose the right one or the right ones and you can use up to 30, but it seems that the best advice at the moment is to use between five and nine hashtags. And to make sure that you do not use the same hashtag every time you post. So how can you make sure your hashtags are working for you, then they’re just as this hashtags, shouldn’t just be about you and your business.

(09:48):

They shouldn’t even just be about what you posted. They should be about your customer and who she or he is, what she likes and what she might be searching for at any given time. Remember anywhere there is a search bar, there’s a possibility for you to be found using hashtags like search engine optimization words. So keywords is what you’re thinking about. There are other uses for hashtags beyond adding them to your own posts. You can use the hashtag system and the search feature to discover and connect with potential clients and potential collaborators. Once you found the people you want to connect with, don’t forget to use direct messaging, to start a conversation with them. In the first instance, make sure you don’t send a sales message. You want to share a genuine interest in getting to know the person behind the account before you try to sell anything to them, just like you’d be turned off by someone who tried to sell to you. The moment you met them face to face. The same is true online relationships matter. So I advise you to use these tips to build better relationships on Instagram. And from there you will connect with more ideal clients and gain more customers and sales. I hope you’ve enjoyed this episode of the midlife business show. I’ll be back again next week, buy for now.
