Do you know what your next career move will be? How will you decide? Will you passively let someone else make that decision for you or are you taking control of your career? Recently I’ve been thinking a lot about work and careers. You might think this is strange from someone who has just set up their own business but as more and more people approach me asking for coaching in order to help them get that next promotion or make that life change they so desire. It has led me to this reflection.
I had the pleasure of meeting Glenn Catley, former WBC Super Middleweight Champion of the World and now a hypnotherapist. During our chat, he told me that used hypnotherapy to win his boxing belts. What particularly interested me was his love for what he does. Wow, what a change in career he has had! Yet at the core of each career was a fundamental belief in the role played in our success by our own thoughts and the need to have a dream and a vision to achieve success.

So what is your career vision?
Where are you heading?
Will it be right for you when you get there?
Or haven’t you really considered that!
I know many people who worked hard to achieve what they thought they wanted only to find themselves asking, is this it?
10 questions to ask yourself.
I have put together below a list of 10 questions to ask yourself if you are considering your next move. Take out your journal or a piece of paper and answer these questions as honestly as you can.
- What is your dream job?
- How well do you do your current job?
- What do you love/hate about it?
- What is your visibility like in your current company and in your professional network?
- What is your attitude towards work? If you are mentally checked out you will find it hard to get another job!
- Do you volunteer to get involved in new areas of work so that you learn new skills?
- How mobile are you? Are you prepared to commute or travel? Do you have transport? How might this limit your career progression?
- Do you review your achievements and skills frequently against the needs of the next role?
- Do you learn from your mistakes? Think of some examples that might be relevant.
- Do you gain feedback from your supporters and do you get them to recommend you on LinkedIn?
I would love to hear your answers to these questions!
