Master Your Ideal Client Strategy

In the online business world, we often hear a lot about ideal clients, and sometimes it can feel a bit restrictive, right? If you’re anything like me, you might have resisted the idea of narrowing down your target audience. When I started my coaching business seven years ago, I had a ton of experience working with different people, from board members to rising stars in the corporate world. I had honed my coaching skills and even earned qualifications from a top-notch business school. With such a broad background, the concept of ideal clients didn’t quite sit well with me initially.

But you know what? As a new business owner, I discovered something surprising. The more I delved into my niche and focused on a specific type of client, the more clients I attracted. It might sound counterintuitive, but here’s the secret: people want to work with experts. When you try to please everyone, it becomes tough to effectively communicate through blogs, social media, and websites. The key is to narrow down your focus and speak directly to one person, making a genuine connection. That’s why understanding your ideal client is one of the first and most important steps when setting up your business. And remember, it’s something you’ll revisit from time to time too.

Choosing Your Ideal Client:

As business owners, we have the incredible privilege of choosing who we want to work with. By defining your ideal client, you can create marketing materials that speak directly to that person. Let me share a little story. When I started my business, I naturally attracted corporate coaching clients and individuals looking to switch careers. Given my HR background and experience with a recruitment company, it made sense. Clients would come to me through referrals because they saw me as someone who could help them in those areas. I was grateful for the work, but deep down, something was missing. I didn’t feel that spark of excitement.

Fast forward to today, and let me tell you, my mornings are different. I wake up thrilled about the potential of the clients I’ll be working with. You know that feeling when you’re genuinely excited about the opportunities and growth potential for their business? That’s the magic I want for you too!

Getting to Know Your Ideal Client:

Now, let’s dive into some prompts that will help you gain clarity on who your ideal client is and how you can best serve them. Trust me, it’s a game-changer.

1. Who is Your Ideal Client?

Think about a client you absolutely loved supporting. Someone who made you feel energised and eager to help. If you haven’t had any clients yet, no worries! Imagine someone you’d be thrilled to support—a friend, a role model, or even a celebrity. Picture them in your mind and let’s get to know them better.

2. Understanding Their World:

Let’s explore your ideal client’s demographics. How old are they? Do they have a family? Are they career-oriented? What do they enjoy doing in their free time? Understanding their values is crucial too. We want to connect with clients who share similar values, as it sets a solid foundation for a fruitful working relationship. Also, consider what makes their heart sing and what drives them crazy. What excites them, and what challenges do they face? Make a note of all the problems you think they might be experiencing, even beyond the ones you can help solve. It’s all about building that connection and showing them that you understand their world.

3. Speaking Your Ideal Client’s Language:

When it comes to communication, we need to use the language of our ideal clients. Picture yourself having a lovely chat over a cup of tea or a glass of wine.

How would they describe their problems?

What words do they use?

It’s essential to avoid jargon or complex terminology that might alienate them. Instead, come alongside them and use their language to make a real connection. Your social media content, blogs, and website should make them feel seen and heard because, guess what, you truly do understand them.

Bring Your Ideal Client to Life:

Now that you have a clear vision of your ideal client, let’s bring them to life! Turn this into a fun exercise. Give them a name—let’s say my ideal client is called Sarah. You can even find a stock image that resembles your ideal client or draw a picture of them. These creative tools help you visualise this person and enable you to create content that speaks directly to them. When you write or create any marketing materials, imagine you’re talking directly to Sarah. This personal touch will resonate with your ideal client and foster a stronger connection.

Unlocking Transformation:

Understanding your ideal client isn’t just about knowing who they are; it’s also about knowing how you can help them. Now, let’s think about the transformation you bring about in their lives. Consider where they are before they seek your help. What problems do they want to solve, and what motivates them to seek a solution? Dig deep and find out what their ideal life looks like after working with you. How do they feel, and what positive changes have occurred? This transformation is what you offer, and being able to articulate it clearly will help your ideal clients see why they should invest in your services.
